July 9, 2002 To: Campus Community From: John Holloway, Executive Director, Student Development & Community Service Re: Appointment of Dennis Tibbetts, Ph.D., as the Director of the Native American Resource CenterI am pleased to announce the appointment of Dennis Tibbetts, Ph.D., as the Director of the Native American Resource Center effective July 1, 2002. Dennis is an enrolled member of the White Earth Ojibwe in Minnesota. He received a Bachelors Degree in History from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. He also received a Masters Degree in Counselor Education from Central Michigan University and Doctorate Degree in Counselor Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has been a high school teacher and counselor as well as a clinical counselor at several university counseling centers that included: Central Michigan University, the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. During that time frame Dennis served on the advisory committee to the American Indian Office of Education for the State of Michigan, which was responsible creating the Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver for Native Americans who attended Michigan colleges and universities. Dennis was the Director for the Center of Native American Studies at Northern Michigan University for four years. He was also an Associate Professor in the School of Education where he taught graduate courses in Counselor Education. There are five reservations in the service area of Northern Michigan University and Dennis not only created an outreach and recruitment position he created an honoring ceremony for Distinguished Native American Alumni. For the past two years, Dr. Tibbetts has been an Associate Professor in the Department of Counselor Education at San José State University. He resides on the former Fort Ord with his wife and son. As a former runner, he has discovered bicycling along the coast to be one of the many advantages to living on the Monterey Bay. Dennis is very excited to be a part of the University of California at Santa Cruz and looks forward to working with the faculty, staff, and students UCSC. Dennis is very interested in helping to create a liaison with tribal colleges as well as developing programs and materials that will address the many health concerns of Native people, especially diabetes. A Welcome Reception will be held on Monday, July 15th from 3-5 PM in the Ethnic Resource Center. Please come and welcome Dennis as a new addition to the Division of Student Affairs.
