June 7, 2002 To: Campus Community From: M.R.C. Greenwood, Chancellor Re: Invitation from the ChancellorThe following invitation is being sent on behalf of Chancellor Greenwood, who asks that you disseminate it widely. Thank you. To: Campus Community Dear Colleagues, Please accept my invitation to participate on Friday, June 21, in special events related to the opening of our new national Center for Adaptive Optics, a Science and Technology Center funded by the National Science Foundation. Dr. Rita Colwell, Director of the National Science Foundation, will be our special guest that day to dedicate the center. Dr. Colwell is a distinguished environmental scientist with an international reputation for her work on microorganisms and diseases such as cholera. She also has a deep interest in the international education of women and has worked to build programs in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and other parts of the world. As a highlight of her visit, Dr. Colwell will present her thoughts on "Research Trends and Opportunities at NSF" at 1:30 p.m. that afternoon. The talk is intended for UC Santa Cruz faculty, students, staff, and selected guests. I am pleased to invite -- and encourage -- you to join me for this important presentation and the dedication ceremony immediately following. The lecture is a rare opportunity to gain a national perspective on research trends in many fields, and to learn about the thinking that is guiding some of the most important research funding in our country. As well, the dedication celebration of this important new research center is a major campus milestone and a reason for us all to celebrate. Here is a more detailed schedule for the afternoon. I hope to see you there. Center for Adaptive Optics 1:30 p.m. 3:00 p.m. Presentations in Earth & Marine Sciences B206; Reception and Tours of the Center to follow.
