May 24, 2002 To: Campus Community From: Tom Vani, Vice Chancellor of Business & Administrative Services Re: CNA StrikeAs you may know, the California Nurses Association, the union representing UC nurses, has provided notice to the University that it will stage a one-day strike on May 29th despite the fact that all but a few bargaining issues have been settled. At UCSC approximately 12 nurses working at the campus Student Health Center will be affected by the outcome of these negotiations. A few other UC unions, including those representing Lecturers, Service and Clerical employees, have indicated that they may join in the strike (sometimes called a "sympathy strike") or lend support in other ways. I want to make sure the campus is prepared for this strike and that we are clear about the potential consequences associated with strike actions. If a strike occurs, we can expect to experience some inconveniences such as reduced
bus service and delayed deliveries. However, all offices will remain open to ensure
that this action by some members of our campus community will not prevent others
from conducting business as usual. TAPS will operate all available campus transit
vehicles to accommodate the anticipated demand for shuttle services should the Santa
Cruz Metro (SCMTD) buses refuse to travel onto campus. As in the past, all Route
10,12,13,15,16, 19, 20 and 91 buses will load and unload passengers at transit stops
adjacent to the Main Entrance on Bay and High Streets, and passengers will walk onto
the campus to board Day Shuttles.
