May 2, 2002 To: The UCSC Community From: Chancellor Greenwood Re: Passing of Tom OrtizI was very sorry to learn from our library staff today that a member of our campus community, Tom Ortiz, died unexpectedly in his sleep last night. Tom began working at McHenry Library in 1979, and eventually became the head of the library's Operations Unit, overseeing ordering and receiving and numerous other activities critical to the functioning of that area of the campus. Tom's survivors include his wife, Ellen; his daughter, Felicia; his father, Charles; his sister, Charlene; and his brother, Charles "Leo" Ortiz, chair of our Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department. At this point in time, we do not have information about a service or memorial for Tom. I know you'll join me in expressing our most heart-felt condolences to Tom's family, his colleagues in the library, and his many other friends both on and off campus.
