April 11, 2002 To: Campus Community From: Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood Re: Laureate Court/Hagar CourtDear Colleagues, I am writing to inform you about two actions that UCSC is taking to improve the availability of rental and for-sale housing for its employees. These two actions are described in a campus press release, posted at the following address: http://press.ucsc.edu/01-02/04-10.housing.html Copied below for more information and perspective are memos from Senate Chair Blumenthal and AVC Scott. Cordially yours, M.R.C. Greenwood _____ MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMIC SENATE Dear Colleagues, I am pleased to call your attention to the press release regarding UCSC's purchase of the 64 unit Laureate Court apartment complex located at the southern corner of the Bay and High Street intersection. The prospect of new rental units and units soon available for purchase will provide some much-needed relief from the housing crisis experienced by new faculty and others on campus. This acquisition complements the housing being planned for Inclusionary Area D, while it also mitigates, to some extent, the slipping of the approval process for construction of that project. This purchase has required considerable effort and commitment from the campus, but I regard it as a very positive development in the recruitment and retention of an outstanding faculty. Sincerely, George Blumenthal _____ MEMBERS OF THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY UCSC has announced that it has signed a letter of intent to purchase the Laureate Court Apartments, a 64-unit development on the southern end of the intersection of Bay and High Streets, adjacent to the campus's main entrance. In addition, UCSC will begin the process later this year of converting the 50 existing Hagar Court apartments to condominiums for eventual sale to employees. These two actions, planned together, are being taken to address the campus's critical need for rental and for-sale units that it can make available to faculty and staff. UCSC residents of the Laureate Court and Hagar Court complexes are, obviously, very interested in these actions. Detailed informational materials were distributed to those residents yesterday. If you reside at one of those complexes and did not receive information at your residence and/or you have additional questions, please contact the manager of your respective housing complex. In a related matter, the Campus Welfare Committee (CWC) is currently developing recommendations to be submitted to Provost Simpson for the new Faculty and Staff Housing Principles and Policies Statement. Once approved, this document will govern the faculty and staff for-sale program and the rental program. Please check the CWC webpage (http://planning.ucsc.edu/pac/cwc.html) after April 16 for additional details and to learn more about how you can provide input to the development of the new policy statement. I invite your support for these exciting projects and I welcome any questions that you may have. Regards, Jean Marie Scott
