Re: WARNING: DO NOT RESPOND TO MESSAGES TO CALL AREA CODE "809"
Please do not respond to email messages, phone calls, or web page advertisements
requesting you phone a number with an "809" area code.
CATS has been alerted by Pacific Bell of the following scam involving calls to a
phone number in the "809" area code. Because, the "809" area
code is a valid area code for the Virgin Islands, CATS is unable to block calls made
to this area code. CATS requests that you read all of the following information.
This very important alert found at the following url: http://cats-nts.ucsc.edu/809scam.html.
It informs you about this quickly spreading scam AND warns you about some of the
possible consequences, including the potential costs to you, like receiving a phone
bill reflecting charges of $24,000 or more. This scam has been identified by the
National Fraud Information Center. It is essentially a "976" area code
phone number type scam where your phone number is billed automatically and there
is apparently no way to deny the billing on your telephone bill or receive a refund.
