Re: Professor Emeritus Burney Le Boeuf to serve as interim Vice Chancellor for Research

I am very pleased to announce that Professor Emeritus Burney J. Le Boeuf has agreed to serve as the interim Vice Chancellor for Research (VCR) until the position is filled permanently as the result of an ongoing national search.

In his new role, Dr. Le Boeuf will be responsible for providing coordinated and executive leadership for research administration and planning on the Santa Cruz campus.  Responsibilities of the VCR include: developing research funding opportunities and growth strategies across all academic divisions, developing policies and procedures for research, managing technology transfer activities and the Office of Sponsored Projects, negotiating terms of contracts and grants with funding agencies, providing oversight and ensuring compliance of the campus research environment with local, state and federal regulations and requirements, and providing leadership for off-campus research activities.

Dr. Le Boeuf brings to the position of VCR extensive research experience and familiarity with the UC Santa Cruz campus and its faculty. He received his doctorate from UC Berkeley in 1966 prior to joining the faculty at UCSC. From his initial appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Biology Department, Dr. Le Boeuf rose to the rank of Full Professor of Biology in 1977. His internationally recognized research centers on the evolution of social behavior in seals and sea lions and on their diving behavior and foraging strategies.  He is the leading authority on elephant seals, having studied them extensively at Año Nuevo State Beach and throughout California and Mexico.

The Chancellor and I are delighted to have Dr. Le Boeuf join the senior academic administrative team. The Vice Chancellor of Research position is of vital importance to UC Santa Cruz, particularly within the current context of campus growth. We believe that the appointment of Dr. Le Boeuf is an excellent outcome for the campus. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Le Boeuf to his new position.

John B. Simpson
Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor
