Attacks on Researchers
Community shows support for UCSC researchers
More than 200 members of the campus and Santa Cruz communities gathered at the UC Santa Cruz entrance on August 4 to express their strong support for scientific research at the university-and to denounce attacks at the residences of two faculty members the prior weekend. [See story]
In one case, a fire was started in a vehicle parked in a faculty member's driveway; in the other, a fire was started on the porch of a faculty member's home. "These are odious assaults on individuals and on the principles of free inquiry by which we live," UCSC Chancellor George Blumenthal said in a statement condemning the attacks.
