NASA's Fermi Telescope reveals a new class of pulsars

A new class of pulsars detected by NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope is solving the mystery of previously unidentified gamma-ray sources and helping scientists understand the mechanisms behind pulsar emissions.

A study published by an international team of scientists in the July 2 edition of Science Express describes 16 pulsars discovered by Fermi based on their pulsed emissions of high-energy gamma rays. Robert Johnson, professor of physics at UC Santa Cruz, is among nine UCSC coauthors. Read more »

Sarah Grimke-Aucoin

Sarah Grimké Aucoin:
Last week, Sarah Grimké Aucoin (Porter '91, biology), director of New York City's Urban Park Rangers, was profiled in the New York Times.

Aucoin has worked for the city's Department of Parks and Recreation for nine years and, as director of the Urban Park Rangers, has expanded New Yorkers' opportunities for outdoor adventure and education through citywide programs like overnight camping, catch-and-release fishing, raptor conservation, and the stewardship of New York City's street trees.

Brook Johnston

Brook Johnston: Brook Johnston, a fourth-year business management economics major, is a Formula 1 racer and was named a 2008 ESPN Extreme Athlete of the Year.

Johnston recently took over duties as manager for 16-year-old Santa Cruz motocross racer Josh Van Den Heuvel, who plans to go pro by his 18th birthday.

Johnston and Van Den Heuvel were recently profiled in UCSC's student newspaper, City on a Hill, and in the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
