Field Study Program

Field Study Opportunities for Majors and Non-Majors

The Community Studies Program offers two kinds of academic field studies or internships related to social change work in communities.

Part-Time Field Study

One- or two-quarter local internships for 2-10 units of academic credit. The amount of credit is related to the amount of time spent per week on the field study and the amount of academic work associated with the placement. The Santa Cruz community and the Monterey and San Francisco Bay areas are blessed with a large number of social change organizations that are appropriate sites for part-time internships. Students will need to have an organizational sponsor and a faculty sponsor. Please contact one of the program's Field Coordinators for more information.

Full-Time Field Study (CMMU Majors Only)

The two-quarter (30 units) field study is required of all majors in Community Studies. These field studies are always done either in spring/summer or summer/fall. Field studies must be related to the theory and practice course (CMMU 100A-Z) taken by the student and they must be approved first by the student's faculty advisor and then by one of the Field Study Coordinators. Full time field studies may be arranged in Santa Cruz or elsewhere in the world so long as they are appropriate sites to study the issues covered in the student's theory and practice course and approved by your faculty advisor. The Department has a field study resource office to help students select and develop their full-time field studies located in 207 College Eight.
