Danica L. Stein, a library assistant in McHenry Library, has published "Clora Bryant: Gender Issues in the Career of a West Coast Jazz Musician." The article appears in California Soul: Music of African Americans in the West (Jacqueline Cogdell DjeDje and Eddie S. Meadows, eds.), University of California Press, 1998. Stein's article discusses L.A.-based jazz trumpet player, teacher, and composer Clora Bryant, who has performed worldwide and with such important artists as Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, and the Lennon Sisters. Through a close look at Bryant's life and career, the article discusses some of the gender-based issues faced by professional female musicians, in the context of the southern California jazz scene.
