The Inaugural
Lecture Series at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center continues
on April 18 with talks by assistant research biologist Baldo Marinovic on "El
Niño, Whales, and Krill, Not the Story You Might Expect" and by assistant
professor of ocean sciences Raphael Kudela on "Phytoplankton Dynamics--The Grass
of the Sea." There will be one more evening of lectures on April 25. All the
lectures take place at the Seymour Center from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $6/evening
or $20/series for general admission; $5/evening or $15/series for Friends of Long

Family Student Housing will have a summer program for school-age children running from June 19 to August 25. The program will be open Monday-Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and feature nutritious meals, weekly swimming on campus, a Life Lab garden, visiting artists, and field trips, including trips to Shakespeare Santa Cruz and the Seymour Marine Discovery Center. Join campus faculty and staff for a luncheon at University House on April 27. Meet friends there or reserve a table as a group. The buffet lunch includes soups, salads, gourmet breads and cheeses, desserts, and beverages. The first seating is at noon, with a second seating at 1 p.m. The cost is $10 and reservations are required by April 25; call (831) 459-5271. The final University Club lunch of the year will be on May 18.
In February President Atkinson announced that the University of California will honor all veterans by designating Veterans Day, November 11, as one of its official holidays beginning in fall quarter 2000. In order to incorporate the holiday and meet the minimum days of instruction, classes at UCSC will begin on September 20, rather than the previously scheduled September 21.
"The Color of Violence: Violence Against Women of Color" conference taking place in late April has generated so much interest that organizers have had to close registration. Although registration is closed, general information on the conference is posted at the Web.
"Surviving Perfectionism" is the topic of a workshop for faculty and staff, which will be held on Tuesday, April 25, in the Health Center Conference Room. It is the third in a series of workshops on balancing the competing demands of work and personal life offered by Human Resources in conjunction with the campus Employee Assistance Program provider, Managed Health Network. Two sessions are offered: one from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. and a second from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served; participants are encouraged to bring their lunches.
