Slug Run draws 400 participants

Runners from as far away as Nevada, and ranging in age from two to 83, came to campus April 1 for the April Fools' Slug Run 2000. The nearly 400 runners participated in one of three events: a kids' 1K, a 5K, and a 10K. (Runners names and times) The run was a joint effort between the Santa Cruz Track Club and the UCSC Running Club, headed by writing lecturer Jeff Arnett, with support from OPERS.

UCSC hosting women's water polo championships

The collegiate women's water polo national championships will be held this year at UCSC May 5-7. Twenty games are scheduled for the tournament (eight on Friday, eight on Saturday, four on Sunday). Seed pool play on Friday and Saturday will determine championship pairings for Saturday afternoon and Sunday. All games will take place at the East Field House pool; tickets are $1 per day for students; $4 per day for adults; $10 for an adult tournament pass; free for children 12 and under. Lecture Series at Seymour Center continues

drawing of a whale The Inaugural Lecture Series at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center continues on April 18 with talks by assistant research biologist Baldo Marinovic on "El Niño, Whales, and Krill, Not the Story You Might Expect" and by assistant professor of ocean sciences Raphael Kudela on "Phytoplankton Dynamics--The Grass of the Sea." There will be one more evening of lectures on April 25. All the lectures take place at the Seymour Center from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $6/evening or $20/series for general admission; $5/evening or $15/series for Friends of Long Marine Lab members. Looking for a summer of fun for your school-age children?

Family Student Housing will have a summer program for school-age children running from June 19 to August 25. The program will be open Monday-Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and feature nutritious meals, weekly swimming on campus, a Life Lab garden, visiting artists, and field trips, including trips to Shakespeare Santa Cruz and the Seymour Marine Discovery Center. Priority is based on the application date for fee-for-service spaces. Variable-length contracts are available. For more information, call (831) 459-4085.

University Club lunch

Join campus faculty and staff for a luncheon at University House on April 27. Meet friends there or reserve a table as a group. The buffet lunch includes soups, salads, gourmet breads and cheeses, desserts, and beverages. The first seating is at noon, with a second seating at 1 p.m. The cost is $10 and reservations are required by April 25; call (831) 459-5271. The final University Club lunch of the year will be on May 18.

Campus will observe Veterans Day, November 11

In February President Atkinson announced that the University of California will honor all veterans by designating Veterans Day, November 11, as one of its official holidays beginning in fall quarter 2000. In order to incorporate the holiday and meet the minimum days of instruction, classes at UCSC will begin on September 20, rather than the previously scheduled September 21.

Color of Violence conference closed

"The Color of Violence: Violence Against Women of Color" conference taking place in late April has generated so much interest that organizers have had to close registration. Although registration is closed, general information on the conference is posted at the Web.

Work-Life Balance series continues

"Surviving Perfectionism" is the topic of a workshop for faculty and staff, which will be held on Tuesday, April 25, in the Health Center Conference Room. It is the third in a series of workshops on balancing the competing demands of work and personal life offered by Human Resources in conjunction with the campus Employee Assistance Program provider, Managed Health Network. Two sessions are offered: one from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. and a second from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served; participants are encouraged to bring their lunches. April broadcast schedule for UCSC Forum

UCSC Forum, which features the best of UCSC lectures and programs, airs at 8 p.m. each Sunday and 4:30 p.m. each Wednesday on Community TV of Santa Cruz County, Channel 72.
