music and arts festival to Santa Cruz April 15-21
The second annual Global African Music and Arts Festival/Symposium will take place April 15-21 with a variety of events scheduled at UCSC, downtown Santa Cruz, and San Francisco. The festivals artistic directors--UCSC director of jazz studies Karlton Hester, assistant professor art history Elisabeth Cameron, and Nontsizi Cayou--have put together a dynamic program of lectures and concerts featuring pianist Randy Weston, Donald Byrd and his All-Star Quintet, Domu Africa, and Ensemble Tartit. The festival/symposium is sponsored by the UCSC Division of Arts, Wajumbe
Cultural Institution, Zook Beat, University of California Institute for
Research in the Arts, and African American Innovators. It is cosponsored
by the UCSC Music Department, the Art History Department, Diversity Funds
Grant, and Porter College. For more information on individual performances,

web site. 'Slug Run IV' to take place on
campus April 19 Prizes, a challenging course, a children's run, T-shirts, food, and beautiful views make for a great family event at Slug Run IV. The race, sponsored by the Santa Cruz Track Club, UCSC Cross Country Club, and Fleet Feet of Aptos, will take place on April 19, rain or shine. The event includes 10K, 5K, and Kids 1K runs. There'll be T-shirts for all preregistered 5K and 10K entries, and the top three finishers in each five-year division will receive awards. All participants in the 1K Kids Run will receive ribbons. Packets also will be available race day. Life Lab offers popular day camp again this summer The Life Lab Science Program based
at UCSC will offer its popular day camp program for children again this
summer, and a new session will be offered for older children. The Wildlands & Watering Cans Summer Day Camp is available for children
ages 7 to 10. Campers will enjoy garden-based activities and art projects,
hiking on the campus, and exploring the Farm & Garden of the Center
for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems. Registrations are being
accepted now for one-week sessions that run Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m. Sessions will be offered June 23-27, July 7-11, and July 14-18.
Cost is $220 per session for members of Life Lab Garden Classroom, or
$250 for nonmembers. Each session will serve 24 campers; four instructors
will provide plenty of hands-on instruction. See a sample camp
schedule New this year is a two-week session for 11- to 13-year-olds. Millipedes
& Microscopes: A Garden Exploration will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
July 28 - August 8. Two counselors will run the session for 14 campers.
Cost is $320 per session for Life Lab members, or $350 for nonmembers. Millipedes & Microscopes will offer older campers a chance to develop
their scientific skills as they design their own garden-based plant experiments.
They will examine invertebrates under a microscope, learn animal-tracking
techniques, learn about animal adaptations, harvest and cook produce from
the Farm & Garden, and much more. Partial scholarship assistance is available. Details and registration

AIS offers practice sessions with new software AIS will be offering one-hour sessions in the Kerr Hall PC Computer Lab for those who would like to get a "hands-on" experience of the PeopleSoft application environment. Topics will include: signing In, page elements, navigation, access keys,
committing changes, and terminology. Dates are: April 25 and 29, May 19 and 27, and June 16 and 23. Sessions
are scheduled each day at 8:30, 10, and 11:30 a.m., and 2 and 3:30 p.m.
Handouts will be provided. Documentary to be screened on April 16 The new UCSC Institute for Advanced Feminist Research will present the second in a series of three events that are part of its Feminism and Global War Project. Rhonda Ramiro of the Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines will screen the documentary film Behind the Second Front on Wednesday, April 16, at 7 p.m. in the Louden Nelson Auditorium, 301 Center Street, in downtown Santa Cruz. The film chronicles the activities of an international solidarity mission that took place last July. The mission exposed the human-rights atrocities that have occurred since U.S. troops occupied Mindanao, a southern island in the Philippine archipelago, as part of the war on terrorism. Recreation Department offers classes in basic and advanced drumming The Recreation Office has the following classes starting this week. To register, call (831) 459-2806 or show up at the first day of the class. Hand Drumming: Basic drumming skills, the language of rhythm,
and a knowledge base of drumming culture, while teaching music of the
African Diaspora. Ensemble setting. Drums provided. Instructor is Don
Davidson, davidson@cruzio.com. Ensemble Drumming Class: Advanced drum technique, accompanying
percussion, breaks, songs, arranging, and how to work as an ensemble.
Prerequisite: Intro to Hand Drumming level 1. Instructor is Don Davidson. University Center hires new manager; Conference Services to get new interim director Janice Clark has been hired as the new University Center manager. Clark
brings to campus over 17 years of experience, with nine of those years
focused specifically in local government. Her most recent experience was
with the City Manager's Office in Ventura, Calif. Clark can be reached
at (831) 459-4321. Martha Keeler, who served as interim University Center manager prior
to Clark's hiring, will now transition into the interim Conference Services
assistant director, a position she will hold through March 2004. Keeler's
skill and expertise will be particularly important as the current assistant
director, Nancy D'Angelo, is retiring this spring. Keeler can be reached
