Systemwide staff group to meet at UCSC

UCSC will host a three-day meeting of UC Staff Assemblies (CUCSA), the UC systemwide staff organization, beginning on February 10.

Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood will welcome CUCSA members when they arrive; Paul Schwartz, communications director for human resources and labor relations in the UC Office of the President, will address the gathering; UC Regents Alfredo Terrazas and John G. Davies are scheduled to attend, as well as Student Regent-designate Matthew Murray.

Agenda items include an update on the state budget and its impact on the university and a report on a CUCSA discussion with Regent Ward Connerly to establish a staff representative to the UC Board of Regents.

CUCSA is an advisory body made up of staff delegates from each of the nine UC campuses, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and the Office of the President. CUCSA meets on a quarterly basis, rotating among campuses, to discuss issues of importance to staff and to provide feedback to the Office of the President on these issues.

UCSC representatives to the council are Staff Advisory Board (SAB) members Patt Takeuchi, financial planning analyst, and Ed Titus, campus telecommunications manager. To reach the SAB, send e-mail to Titus at etitus@ucsc.edu.

Buy a share in the Farm's CSA program and get a season's worth of fresh organic produce

You can help support apprenticing growers and organic food advocates by becoming a member of the Farm and Garden's CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program. In return you will receive a season's worth of fresh organic produce and access to the CSA pick-your-own herb and flower garden.

The cost is $600 for a full share (feeds four people) or $380 for a half share; low income households pay half the cost of a regular share. Boxes of produce will be ready for pickup at the Farm in early June. For more information, visit the CSA web site, call (831) 459-4661, or e-mail navail@ucsc.edu.

Running clinics open to novices and veterans

UCSC men's cross-country coach Jeff Arnett and veteran team members are offering two running clinics. The focus will be on preparing
runners for the 10 or 5K Slug Run on April 19. Clinics include video
form analysis, plyometrics, strength training, and mental preparation.
Workouts will include hills, interval, tempo runs, and long Sunday runs
(optional). There will be at least one run of the Slug Run courses (5 or 10K). A great opportunity for both novice runners and veterans who want to refine
their running skills.

The fee is $20 for UCSC students, staff, and faculty, and $30 for community
members. Two consecutive Saturdays: February 8 and 15, from 10 a.m. to noon. Preregister in person at the Recreation Office, or call (831) 459-2806 to register by phone, or come to the first clinic. For more information, contact Jeff Arnett at jarnett@ucsc.edu or (831) 425-1750.

Students invited to apply for 2004-05 Student Regent position

The Career Center is seeking candidates for the position of Student Regent in 2004-05. The time of appointment as a Student Regent begins in September 2003, when the appointee holds the title "Regent-Designate" and is invited to participate as a nonvoting member in all meetings. Commencing July 1, 2004, the Student Regent will serve as a full voting member of the Board of Regents for a year.

A candidate must be an enrolled undergraduate, graduate, or professional student in good academic standing for the two year duration of the appointment. Once appointed, the Student Regent must resign from all other elected or appointed positions. A full description of the position and tips on how to prepare the application are available at the Career Center web site.

The Student Regent's university fees, tuition, and campus parking fees are waived. Additionally, a Student Regent will be reimbursed for expenses incurred for attendance at meetings of the Board and its Committees.

Applications are available at the Career Center and the colleges, or they can be downloaded from the Career Center web site. Completed applications are due no later than February 20. See message from Chancellor Greenwood.
