Campus facilities, offices switch to summer hours

Many UCSC offices and facilities have more limited hours during the summer. The following are the summer hours for some of the most-visited sites:

McHenry Library and the Science & Engineering Library. The libraries will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The regular quarter schedule resumes on September 18. The Special Collections Department of the University Library has new summer hours. From June 17 through September 6, it will be open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 1 to 4 p.m.

Located on the third floor of McHenry Library, Special Collections has a wide range of holdings including local history materials, UCSC master's and Ph.D. theses and dissertations, manuscripts and rare books, book arts, and photo and print archives. Post office.
The campus post office will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. until September 13.

Recreational facilities. The East Field House and 50-meter pool will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m, and Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., excluding holidays. The pool will be closed from July 12 through July 14 during the Master's Long Course Pacific Coast Championships, and is scheduled to close for several days in late August so the sanitation system can be replaced. The Outdoor Equipment Rental Center will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 5:30 p.m. through August 6, and the Marina will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m., through September 17.

Bookstore. Bay Tree Bookstore keeps its regular hours during the summer. It is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed on Sunday.

Restaurants, dining halls. The only campus eateries open during the summer are the Whole Earth Restaurant, Stevenson College Coffee House, and the Merrill Taqueria. The Whole Earth will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and closed on weekends. (831) 459-3066. Stevenson College Coffee House is open from 7:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, and closed weekends, until August 22. (831) 459-2433. The Merrill Taquieria will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, until August 20. Those visiting campus are welcome to purchase individual meals at the Crown, Merrill, and College Eight dining halls.

CATS Instructional Computing Labs. Social Sciences 1 is the only computer lab open during the summer (June17-August 23). Social Science 1 lab, Room 135, is open Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Fridays,10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and closed Saturday and Sunday, except July 14 and August 18 from 2-9 p.m. for finals.

Summer lab use requires a lab pass (included in Summer Session fees). You may purchase a summer lab pass if you are a UCSC student with an ID card validated for either Spring or Fall 2002, UCSC faculty or staff, or a participant in a UCSC Summer Conference. Summer lab passes cost $24 for the duration of the summer session. Other labs will be used for conferences, but they are not available for general open access use.

Joseph M. Long Marine Laboratory. Tours of Long Marine Lab are offered from 1 to 3 p.m. daily (last tour ends at 4 p.m.). The Seymour Marine Discovery Center is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. It is closed Mondays. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors, and free for children ages 5 and under. Admission is free the first Tuesday of each month. The center will be closed on Thursday, July 4.

The Arboretum. The Arboretum is open year-round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except on Thanksgiving and Christmas. The gift shop is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. The Jean and Bill Lane Horticultural Library, a nonlending library of horticultural and botanical books, is open Wednesday through Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. (831) 427-2998.

Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems. The Farm and the Chadwick Garden are open to the public every day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the summer.

Lick Observatory Lick is located atop Mount Hamilton, 19 miles east of San Jose. The visitors' center is open from 12:30 to 5 p.m. weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. The observatory offers summertime viewing events. For more information, call (408) 274-5061.
