Mystified by fruit trees? Answers are free January 12

Sixteenth-century woodcut found in De Omnibus agriculturae partibus, by Petrus Crescentius.
Have you been lusting after your neighbor's lemon tree? Attracted by the bounty of a friend's apple tree? Coveting the apricot tree down the block, yet too intimidated by the care of fruit trees to add these beauties to your garden?

Fear no more, for help is on the way. Fruit tree expert Orin Martin, manager of the Alan Chadwick Garden at UC Santa Cruz, will hold a free question-and-answer session on Saturday, January 12, from 10 a.m. to noon at the San Lorenzo Garden Center at 236 River Street in Santa Cruz.

Martin will discuss the general care of fruit trees and will offer advice on the varietal selections that are best suited for home gardens.

Martin's talk is sponsored by the Friends of the UCSC Farm & Garden, which supports the activities of the UCSC Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems.

For more information, call (831) 459-3240.

Help identify a student Regent

The Career Center is asking for the campus community's support in identifying students who may be want to apply for the student Regent position on the Board of Regents of the University of California.

The appointee will be a non-voting participant until July 1, 2003, when the student will become a full voting member. The student Regent must be an enrolled undergraduate, graduate, or professional student in good academic standing for the two-year term. Once appointed, the student Regent must resign all other elected or appointed positions. University fees, tuition, and parking at UCSC are waived for the student Regent, who is also reimbursed for expenses incurred attending meetings. Applications are available at the Career Center, 305 Bay Tree Building, or may be downloaded from this web site: http://www2.ucsc.edu/careers/jobs/regent.html.

All applications are due by February 21.

Volunteer training classes at the Arboretum

The Arboretum is offering a volunteer training class on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon for six weeks, January 9 through February 13. The class is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the Arboretum's collections, gardening in our Mediterranean climate, and the role of public gardens in plant conservation. No experience is necessary. The class is free, but attendees are expected to buy a book: Plants of the World's Mediterranean Climates, by Peter Dallman (approximately $28). The majority of the time will be spent out in the gardens. The Arboretum's collections include extensive Australian, New Zealand, South African, and Californian gardens.

The Arboretum staff hopes some who attend will become inspired to join their community of volunteers who greet visitors, repot plants, help with plant sales, and work in the gardens. The class will be held at the Horticulture Building. New members can preregister by calling (831) 427-2998, or just show up at the first class.

Those interested in leading tours can attend the Tour Guide Training class on February 20 and 27, led by Phyllis Norris and Stephen McCabe. Training is free. Call (831) 427-2998 for information or optional preregistration.

Researchers sought for career day presentations

If you are a researcher willing to spend part of a Saturday in early March describing your career to high school girls, then the planning committee for the UCSC Expanding Your Horizons career day wants you! The committee is looking for faculty, postdoc, and graduate student volunteers to organize workshops and presentations that show the variety of research careers in natural sciences, social sciences, and engineering--and, in particular, the excitement that draws people to devote their professional lives to research. The Expanding Your Horizons career day for high school girls will take place on Saturday, March 2; the deadline for submitting workshop ideas is January 14. For more information, contact Roberta Valdez, director of the UCSC Women's Center, rvaldez@cats.ucsc.edu.
