Responses to last week's question: Currents readers were extremely positive about the idea of a campus center for student life in the Bay Tree Bookstore/Graduate Commons area. A sampling of readers' views follows.
On the yes side:
"UCSC really needs some sort of commons and a union with a variety of activities. This is especially important as the campus grows."
"There is a need for some sort of Student Center to provide activities in the evenings and on weekends . . . for a richer student life than the one that is currently offered."
"Although The Commons may never be able to create the kind of 'thick' civil society of Sather Gate in Berkeley, this is the sort of place we should be trying to create."
Unsure:
"I don't think the question provides enough information to respond to. Are we talking a rec hall/pool room? Retail stores? a bar? If so, I think it would send S/C city through the roof--they need student business, and the student presence contributes to city diversity."
Tell us what you think: Each week, we post a question about a
topic that's been in the news, is of general interest, or has been suggested
by our readers. You have a chance to "weigh in" with a simple "yes," "no,"
or "unsure," or you may elaborate if you like. Responses are due by Friday
at 8 a.m.
Win a nifty Currents Online coffee mug: Each week, the names
of five respondents are drawn at random to win a mug. Participants must
be UCSC staff, faculty, or students. Please submit your name and campus
e-mail address on the response form. One mug per person.
This week's question: The volume of e-mail that people receive is increasing rapidly. Has e-mail technology improved your school/work life?
