Bike to Work/School Day, other events mark Bike Week
Bike to Work/School Day, safety classes with prizes, and free bike maintenance
are some of the events on tap for Bike Week 2001.
Bicyclists will be treated to a free breakfast from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Women's
Center and the Student Center (at the Bike Co-op) on Thursday, May 17, Bike to Work/School
Day. The TAPS Bike Shuttle/Trailer will be running from Marcelo's from 7 to 10:15
a.m. for those not interested in pedaling all the way up Bay Street.
Bike Safety classes will teach riders how to navigate busy urban roadways with confidence,
with a rechargeable bike light given away at each class. Classes are scheduled for
these dates:
- May 13, Louden Nelson Center, 2-4 p.m.
- May 14, Cycle Works, 41st Avenue across from Spa Fitness, 6-8 p.m.
- May 15, Sprockets, Mission Street near Bay Street. 6-8 p.m.
Other activities include:
- Free bike maintenance at the Bike Church, 224 Walnut Ave., 3-7 p.m., Monday-Thursday.
- Human Powered Parade beginning at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at The
Bicycle Trip, 1127 Soquel Ave.
- Group Commute Rides offer the opportunity to ride in the company of other
cyclists and learn the best routes and safe riding techniques. The rides are May
14, meeting at Beckmann's on the west side of Santa Cruz and riding to Capitola,
7:15 a.m.; and meeting May 15 at The Ugly Mug in Soquel and riding to downtown Santa
Cruz, 7:15 a.m.
