Spring is the season for cultural festivals at UCSC

For those in the Santa Cruz community who want to experience a variety of different cultures, spring at UCSC is the time and place to do it.

Dance, food, and music will be some of the areas showcased at UCSC's spring festivals.
Whether you want to listen to Native American Music, eat authentic Indian food, or enjoy folkloric Mexican dance, the opportunity awaits you on campus this spring. Here are some of the multicultural events that student groups at UCSC are sponsoring:

African Appreciation Day
Saturday, April 21
12:30-7:30 p.m.
College Eight Plaza
African Appreciation Day is a celebration of African culture brought to you by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. The day will be filled with activities ranging from live entertainment to speakers. For more information contact Mangwi Atia at (831) 502-7989.

Pilipino Cultural Celebration
Friday, April 27, 8 p.m.
Saturday, April 28, 4 p.m.
Stevenson College Dining Hall
This year marks the 10th annual Pilipino Cultural Celebration, hosted by the UCSC Filipino Student Association. The event includes a mixture of hip-hop dancing, singing, and theatrical performances. For more information contact Kimi Mojika at (831) 427-3131.

The 22nd Annual Multicultural Festival
Saturday, May 5
12-6 p.m.
Oakes College Field
The Multicultural Festival is one of the most popular annual events in the Monterey Bay Area. It is an all-day celebration of international cultures offering live entertainment and a wide variety of traditional ethnic cuisines. Each year, the Multicultural Festival brings together thousands of participants to dance, eat, and celebrate the many cultures represented at UCSC. A Journey Through India
Saturday, May 12
1:30-10:30 p.m.
Stevenson College Dining Hall
The Fourth Annual Indian cultural show, "A Journey Through India," includes dancing, poetry, fashion shows, skits, singing, instrumental pieces, and good food--all in celebration of Indian culture. The event is sponsored by the UCSC Indian Student Organization. For more information contact Akinder Gill at (831) 502-1395.

Red Rocks
Sunday, May 20
Noon.-6 p.m.
Oakes Lower Lawn
The inaugural Native American outdoor music festival is presented by the Student Alliance of North American Indians. This festival includes live entertainment, informational booths, and food vendors. For more information contact Mirasol Ramirez at (831) 502-8151.

Grupo Folklorico Los Mejicas Spring Concert
Friday, June 1, and Saturday, June 2
7:30 p.m.
Theater Arts Mainstage
The Grupo Folklorico Los Mejicas Spring Concert is an annual show celebrating Mexican folkloric dance from numerous regions of Mexico. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students. For more information contact Malena Vega at (831) 458-0642.
