Student Achievement Award applications due April 20

Student research will be celebrated during Student Achievement Week, May 29 through June 1. Undergraduate students are encouraged to submit their research projects, such as their senior thesis, to their division (Arts, Engineering, Humanities, Natural Sciences, or Social Sciences) for consideration for student achievement awards. Deans' Awards (10 from each division), Chancellor's Awards (three chosen from the 10 awarded by each division), and the Steck Award (chosen from the 15 Chancellor's Award recipients) will be presented at a ceremony at University House on Friday, June 1. The winning students, along with the faculty members who worked with them on their project, will attend the ceremony and are formally recognized by the Chancellor and others for their work. Students interested in applying should contact their division or department office for information. The deadline to apply for these awards is Friday, April 20. Women's Center invites young artists to exhibit their work

Children of UC staff, students, and faculty are invited to participate in a Children's Art Show, a celebration of children in our community. The show will take place at the Women's Center Gallery May 12-20. A reception/party for the show will be held on Sunday, May 13. Art may be in any medium and can even be a collaborative, intergenerational project. Artists must be between 3-13 years of age. The Women's Center is also looking for adults and/or children who would like to perform, recite, or even tell a story for the show's opening reception. Noontime yoga classes

The Recreation Office is offering drop-in fitness classes this spring.

  • Yoga stretch classes take place Tuesdays and Fridays through June 5. Classes are from noon to 1 p.m. in the Martial Arts Room at the East Field House.
  • Yoga/Pilates classes are every Monday through June 4. Classes are from noon to 1 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room at the East Field House.

Women at Work Retreat accepting applications

St. Francis Retreat in San Juan Bautista
This year's Women at Work Retreat will take place at the St. Francis Retreat Center in San Juan Bautista on Thursday and Friday, May 24 and 25. The retreat focuses on career development issues, job-related skills, and networking among campus staff. The retreat begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday, and participants return to Santa Cruz by 5 p.m. Friday. All nonprobationary full-time and part-time career staff up to and including the level of PSS Grade I, as well as casual employees with two years cumulative experience, are invited to apply. The cost is $95, which includes meals and overnight accommodation. Campus supervisors have been asked to release time and funding for those interested in attending. Applications are due March 30. Registration for spring recreation classes begins April 3

Recreation Registration for students only will take place on Tuesday, April 3, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Recreation Office, East Field House. Registration for staff, faculty, and community members begins on Wednesday, April 4; hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sign up for surfing, cooking, dance, pottery, kayaking, rock climbing, backpacking, day hikes, survival skills, massage, acupressure, mountain biking, womens' trips, wilderness first aid, and CPR, among others.

UC Retirees to hold semiannual meeting at Seymour Center

On Thursday, March 29, the UCSC Retirees Association will host the semiannual meeting of the Council of University of California Retirees Associations (CUCRA). The meeting will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the La Feliz Conference Room at the Seymour Discovery Center, Long Marine Lab. A bus tour of the campus will be offered at 3 p.m. Officers and representatives from each of the UC campus retirees associations are expected to attend. The agenda includes a presentation by a representative of the Office of the President; and reports on the university retirement system; statewide and nationwide legislative issues concerning retirees; and an update on current concerns and questions about health-related issues. A limited number of seats are available to members who wish to sit in on the proceedings; reservations are required. Find rental housing on the web

The Community Rentals Office now has a web site that allows viewers to search for rental housing. Faculty and staff members are eligible to view the site after enrolling with the Faculty Housing Office. Available rentals can be viewed as a whole or via filters (sorted by price, size, or area parameters)

To enroll, call (831) 458-3506 or e-mail facultyhousing@cats.ucsc.edu. The Faculty Housing Office will need your name and social security number. You can view the site by going to the "Search Listings" link and then entering your name and social security number.
