Prepared statement on behalf of Karl Pister, Chancellor Emeritus

Karl S. Pister, UCSC Chancellor emeritus, was a close colleague and mentor to Chancellor Denton throughout her career. He is very disappointed he could not be here today because of a previous commitment and sent the following statement:

"It is with sincere regret that a longstanding commitment makes it impossible for me to be present to honor the memory of Chancellor Denton.

I have known and worked with Denice in a number of capacities going back to the time of her doctorate at MIT. She shared with me both her trials and successes in her brief, but brilliant, career.

Her passion for equality of opportunity for all persons is a legacy that she leaves to challenge us all. We can and must honor her by continuing the work that she most ably led by her example.

May I extend to her family, her friends and all the UC Santa Cruz community my deepest sympathy on the loss of a brilliant colleague."
